Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles have in the last few minutes, finished a goalless draw with Mexico’s national team, in an international friendly played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Playing in front of a record 68,220 spectators, both teams had several scoring chances throughout the game but the heroics of the keepers kept the game even. Mexican Guillermo Ochoa made six saves while Super Eagles duo Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide pulled off five stops between them.
With just 11 minutes on the clock, Super Eagles goal poacher, Emmanuel Emenike, forced an outstanding save from Ochoa. Seconds, later, the El Tri’s keeper was once again called into action by Ogenyi Onazi’s shot from outside the box.
The Mexicans tried to get the better of Nigeria’s first choice goal tender, Vincent Enyeama, in the 26th minute through a Rafa Marquez’s header. His effort was, however, tipped over the bar by the Nigerian.
The second half was much the same with both teams creating chances but finding it difficult to find the net. At the end of the 90 minutes, the scoreline has not changed at Nigeria 0, Mexico 0.
Speaking after the match, Super Eagles manager, Stephen Keshi, says the tune-up match was good for the Eagles.
“This is not the final squad; nobody is guaranteed a spot,” he said. “We didn’t really play our style. We’ve been out for about four or five months; with different teams … different styles. That’s why I’m glad we played a team like Mexico (that keeps the ball on the ground).”
