Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool to become the club’s next manager.
According to Spanish outlet OK Diario, Liverpool are considering a three-year deal for the Spaniard. The proposed agreement would run for three seasons.
Strong ties to Anfield
Alonso has long been viewed as a perfect candidate for the Liverpool job due to his strong ties with the club and his growing reputation as one of Europe’s most promising tacticians.
The Spaniard spent five seasons at Anfield between 2004 and 2009, winning the Champions League in 2005 and becoming a fan favourite during one of the most memorable periods in the club’s history.
His coaching achievements with Bayer 04 Leverkusen have further enhanced his reputation, placing him among the most sought-after young managers in European football.
Reports also claim contacts between Liverpool and Alonso’s representatives date back to November 2025, indicating the club has been monitoring his situation for several months.
Pressure mounting on Slot
Slot is facing increasing pressure during his second season in charge, particularly after a sharp decline in domestic form following last year’s Premier League title success.
Liverpool currently sit sixth in the league standings, outside the automatic qualification places for next season’s Champions League. With qualification for Europe’s elite competition considered essential by the club’s ownership, failure to secure a top-four finish could play a decisive role in Slot’s future.
The pressure intensified on Tuesday night after Liverpool suffered a 1–0 defeat to Galatasaray S.K. in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie in the Champions League.
