The Federal Government has strongly condemned Israel’s recent preemptive strike on Iran, warning that the intensifying conflict between the two nations poses a serious threat to regional and global peace.
The condemnation was issued in a statement released on Saturday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its spokesperson.
According to the statement, Nigeria expressed “grave concern” over the ongoing missile and aerial exchanges between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel, triggered by Israel’s initial strike.
The Nigerian government emphasized that the escalating cycle of retaliatory attacks risks deepening instability across the Middle East and could have far-reaching consequences for global security and economic development.
“Nigeria calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges both parties to exercise the utmost restraint.
“The continued exchange of fire endangers civilian lives and threatens to plunge the broader region into chaos”, the statement reads.
Reaffirming its longstanding commitment to peaceful coexistence, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria urged both nations to abandon military confrontation in favour of dialogue and diplomacy.
The country called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to step up efforts to de-escalate the situation and provide a platform for constructive engagement between the warring parties.
“Nigeria reiterates that military action is not a substitute for negotiation. The path to lasting peace lies in diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law,” the statement emphasised.
FG further stated its readiness to support any genuine international efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting long-term peace in the region.
