Abia unveils logo for grassroots sports development
The quest by the Governor Okezie Ikpeazu administration to revolutionise sports in the state has received a boost with the unveiling of the Logo of the Abia State Grassroots’ Sports Development Initiative at Nwankwo Kanu Indoor Sports Hall, Umuahia Township stadium.
Ikpeazu, while unveiling the Logo, noted that the occasion marked the beginning of taking the children of Abia, aged between 11 and 15, to higher pedestal in their lives.
Chinwe Nwangaga, Abia Sports Commissioner who spoke on behalf of the governor during the occasion said that a great sports institute would be built in Abia with the registration of 1020 young boys and girls selected from across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The governor said the event was one of the well-attended sports meeting ever in the state.
“What we are doing today, parents, is to take your children to another pedestal both educationally, financially, morally and otherwise. We want to churn out sports people who will be disciplined. What we had in the past about sports people was undisciplined ones. This class of people, aged between 11 and 15, will be trained in such a way that parents will be proud of them,” said Ikpeazu.
Ignatius Chukwu, the Media consultant on behalf of BusinessDay Newspapers, the Media partners of ABGRASOD, said anywhere in the world sports did not begin with words but action.
He noted that the step taken by Abia State government and its partners, ABGRASOD, was a good one in the right direction and charged Abia children to embrace the opportunity given to them by the state government.
Chukwu noted that in no distant time most of the selected boys and girls would be hitting Newspapers’ headlines for exploits they had made in the field of sports.
