The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert warning of a high possibility of protests in the Nigerian capital on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, amid tensions linked to the current conflict with Iran.
In a notice to American citizens, the embassy said demonstrations could take place in Abuja and advised its nationals to remain in their homes throughout the day as a precaution.

The alert follows previous protests by some groups that led to violent clashes with Nigerian security forces. While no specific locations were named, the embassy warned that gatherings could escalate quickly and pose risks to bystanders.
The mission strongly recommended that US citizens avoid areas where protests are taking place and steer clear of large crowds. It urged those who unexpectedly find themselves near demonstrations to exercise caution and leave the area as soon as it is safe to do so.

Citizens were also advised to monitor local media for updates, remain aware of their surroundings and keep a low profile. The embassy called on Americans to review their personal security plans, ensure their mobile phones are fully charged and carry proper identification at all times.
The alert extended beyond protest sites, urging vigilance in public spaces such as shopping centres, cinemas and places of worship. It also encouraged people to familiarise themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings and to vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability.
Despite the warning, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open. The embassy said it will continue to provide updates through its official website as the situation develops.
Nigerian authorities have not issued a separate public statement on the matter as of press time.
