The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its offices in Abuja and Lagos in observance of Presidents’ Day.
In a notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the mission stated that both the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, 16 February, to mark the annual federal holiday in the United States.
Presidents’ Day is observed annually in the United States on the third Monday of February.

The holiday creates a long weekend for Americans, as federal government offices, banks, post offices, and many schools and businesses close in observance.
Originally established to honour the birthday of the first US president, George Washington, who was born in 1732, the holiday later evolved in scope. In 1971, it was officially recognised as a federal holiday celebrating all US presidents and their contributions to the nation’s history and global influence.
While the closure primarily affects routine consular and administrative services, emergency services for American citizens are typically available during public holidays.
