Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, has announced that the newly established UNESCO Category 2 International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja will serve as a global hub in the fight against misinformation and the promotion of responsible communication across Africa and beyond.
Idris disclosed this at the BusinessDay Public Service Lecture and Excellence Awards 2025 on Wednesday in Abuja, where he was honoured for his contributions to public service and communication reforms.
Describing the institute as a “milestone” in the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s information ecosystem, the minister noted that the centre, first of its kind on the African continent would focus on research, training, and capacity-building in media literacy and ethical communication.
According to him, “The institute will serve as a global hub for research, training, and capacity-building in media literacy, responsible communication, and the fight against misinformation.
“Its presence in Nigeria underscores the country’s growing leadership in fostering an informed and ethical information environment.”
Reflecting on the ministry’s work over the past two years, Idris said the Tinubu administration has been committed to rebuilding public trust and enhancing transparency in government communication.
He highlighted efforts to revitalise the national orientation framework, professionalise public information structures, and promote media responsibility and accountability across the sector.
“This nomination is not merely a personal honour; it is a recognition of the work of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation,” he said, thanking BusinessDay Media and its Research and Intelligence Unit for the award.
