President Bola Tinubu is set to swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday, following the Nigeria Police Council’s unanimous endorsement of his appointment on Monday.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the swearing-in will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day.
The Police Council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was presided over by Tinubu and attended by Kashim Shettima, Vice President, state governors, and Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, in line with constitutional provisions.

Other dignitaries present included George Akume; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser, Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff; Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs; Nyesom Wike; FCT Minister, and Esther Walson-Jack, Head of Service.
During the meeting, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, praised Disu for his distinguished service, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he gained recognition for excellence in crime control.
Abdullahi Sule, Governor of Nasarawa State Governor also commended the President’s choice, noting that Disu’s appointment reflected his stellar career record.
Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister, highlighted Disu’s professionalism, recalling his service as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping unit in Rivers State between 2014 and 2015.
Wike further noted Disu’s tenure as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command, commending his efficiency and strategic contributions to security management in the territory.
Peter Mbah, Enugu State Governor seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.
Disu’s confirmation comes less than a week after Tinubu appointed him Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
He holds multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, credentials the Presidency said underscore his commitment to knowledge-driven, modern policing.

Before his appointment as Acting IGP, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos.
Notably, he previously worked under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007.
