As part of activities marking Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s second anniversary in office, the Ebonyi State Government, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), and the Ike-Elechi Ogba Foundation have launched a new initiative focused on the state’s solid mineral sector.
The conference, titled “Solid Mineral Resources: The Government and the People, 2023–2025”, was held on 23 May at the EBSU campus. It brought together government officials, academics, community leaders, and stakeholders to discuss the role of minerals in driving economic development.
Representing Governor Nwifuru, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Business Development, Chief Oguzor Offia-Nwali, delivered the keynote. He said the administration was committed to using the solid minerals sector to drive industrialisation, rural development, and job creation.

The Governor acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development, EBSU, and the Ike-Elechi Ogba Foundation in forming a partnership “focused on responsible mining, data-driven policy, and community development.”
Hon. Chidi Onyia, Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, said the event was the first of its kind in the state. He shared that over 100 disputes between host communities and mining operators had been resolved, and that enforcement against illegal mining had been stepped up.
Professor Ike-Elechi Ogba, EBSU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), said the university would support the government with research, policy input, and workforce development.
Speaking for the Foundation, CEO Mrs Chioma Ike-Elechi Ogba said, “This initiative reflects our belief that Ebonyi’s mineral resources are not just economic assets, but a key part of our cultural heritage.”
A joint communiqué was issued, outlining steps to strengthen environmental protection, increase local participation, and deepen cooperation among stakeholders.
The initiative reflects a broader aim to use Ebonyi’s mineral resources to support sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
