Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to score the decisive goal as Manchester United edged Everton 1-0, stretching their unbeaten run to 10 matches and moving back into fourth place in the Premier League.
The win marked United’s fifth win in six games under Michael Carrick, lifting them above Chelsea and within three points of third-placed Aston Villa.

Sesko, 22, finished a swift second-half counter-attack in the 71st minute to register his third substitute goal of the league campaign, more than any other player this season.
The move began deep in United’s half, with Sesko laying the ball off to Matheus Cunha before continuing his run. Cunha’s long pass found Bryan Mbeumo, and Sesko raced beyond Everton’s defence to apply a composed first-time finish for his eighth goal of the season.
Remarkably, only two of those strikes came under former manager Ruben Amorim, with three arriving during Darren Fletcher’s brief interim spell and three more under Carrick.
The breakthrough was a rare moment of quality in a match largely short on clear chances at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. James Tarkowski cleared off the line in the first half after Amad Diallo’s effort was partially saved by Jordan Pickford.
Everton threatened late on, but visiting goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied teenager Harrison Armstrong and later tipped over a fierce long-range strike from Michael Keane.
The defeat extends Everton’s winless home run to seven matches in all competitions, leaving them ninth in the table.
For United, it was a first appearance at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium, and one that ended with another vital three points in their push for Champions League qualification.
