The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Sylvester Nwakuche as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The confirmation took place on Tuesday following the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North).
Presenting the report, Oshiomhole stated, “That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Interior on the confirmation of the nomination of Nwakuche, Sylvester Ndidi mni, MFR, for appointment as Comptroller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).”
After the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio charged Nwakuche with the responsibility of tackling jailbreaks across the country, emphasising the critical nature of his appointment.
Akpabio remarked, “To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks.”
President Bola Tinubu had, on the previous Tuesday, submitted Nwakuche’s nomination for Senate approval.
In his letter, read during plenary by Akpabio, the President read, “In compliance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Act, 2019, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Mr. Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as Comptroller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).”
He urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process, emphasising the nominee’s qualifications and the urgency of the appointment.

The confirmation was then referred to the Senate Committee on Interior for further legislative review, with a directive to report back within a week.
Meanwhile, the Senate has also confirmed the appointment of Professor Melvin Ayogu as a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board of Directors.
Ayogu, an indigene of Enugu State, is a Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
The confirmation followed the presentation and review of a report by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).
Due to Abiru’s absence, the report was presented by Senator Osita Izunaso (APC, Imo West).
Izunaso said, “The Senate has received and considered the report of the Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions regarding the confirmation of the nomination of Prof. Melvin Damian Ayogu for appointment as a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
The confirmation came a week after President Tinubu submitted Ayogu’s nomination for Senate approval.
In a letter read by Akpabio during plenary, Tinubu wrote, “In compliance with Section 10(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2007, I am pleased to present, for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Prof. Melvin D. Ayogu as a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“His Curriculum Vitae is attached for your review.”
The President further noted that the nomination aligns with Section 6 of the CBN Act, 2007, which stipulates the composition of the Board of Directors of the apex bank.
