Gunmen on Friday killed a police officer and abducted a Chinese expatriate, identified as the principal officer of Aqua Triton Company, during a violent attack in the Ogunmakin area of Ibadan, Oyo State, heightening fresh concerns over the safety of expatriates and security personnel in the South-West.
Security sources said the attackers struck the premises of the construction and engineering firm in the early hours, overpowering security operatives stationed at the site. During the assault, a police officer attached to the company was shot dead, while the Chinese national was forcefully taken away to an unknown location. The assailants reportedly fled the scene before reinforcements could arrive.

The incident triggered a response from security agencies, with operatives launching a manhunt across surrounding communities and major exit routes linking Ibadan to neighbouring states. Authorities said tactical teams had been deployed, while checkpoints were reinforced in an effort to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the abducted expatriate.
A senior police officer confirmed the killing and abduction, describing the attack as “well-coordinated.” According to the source, the gunmen arrived in large numbers, suggesting prior surveillance of the facility. “They knew their target and overwhelmed the security detail. Unfortunately, one of our men paid the ultimate price,” the officer said.
The body of the slain policeman has since been evacuated to a morgue, while arrangements are being made to notify his family and begin official burial rites. The police command said it would ensure that the officer’s sacrifice was duly recognised.
Although the Oyo State Police Command had yet to issue a detailed public statement as of press time, officials said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether it was an isolated criminal act or part of a broader kidnapping ring operating in the region.

The abduction has reignited concerns among residents and business operators in Ogunmakin and adjoining areas, which lie along key industrial and transport corridors. In recent years, parts of Oyo State have witnessed a rise in kidnappings for ransom, often targeting commuters, farmers and expatriate workers linked to foreign-owned firms.
Local community leaders expressed alarm over the latest incident, calling on the government to strengthen security around industrial sites and rural communities. “This area hosts several companies and workers. If criminals can strike so boldly, it sends a very bad signal to investors,” said a resident leader.
Attacks on expatriates could have wider economic implications, particularly for states seeking to attract foreign investment. Sustained insecurity not only threatens lives but also undermines business confidence and job creation.
