…recover vehicle stolen in Maiduguri
The Kano State Police Command has raised concerns over the increasing ease with which criminals move across States’ boundaries after recovering a Toyota Sienna stolen in Borno State, but traced to Kano.
Police said the maroon Toyota Sienna, valued at about ₦20 million, was stolen on January 5, 2026, from Maiduguri GRA in Borno State and later recovered at Hotoro Arewa Quarters in Kano.
Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Command’s spokesperson, disclosed that the vehicle was allegedly stolen by a security watchman employed by the owner, highlighting the growing involvement of insiders in organised vehicle theft.
According to him, operatives attached to the Hotoro Police Division recovered the vehicle on January 7, 2026 barely two days after the theft was reported, following actionable intelligence.
A statement issued by Kiyawa on Sunday said the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, ordered immediate verification of ownership before approving the handover of the vehicle to its rightful owner, Ali Alti.
Police sources said four suspects are currently under investigation in connection with the theft, as detectives work to determine how the vehicle was moved from Maiduguri to Kano without detection.
The Command noted that the recovery reflected a broader security challenge posed by the inter-state movement of criminals and stolen assets, particularly along major urban and commercial routes.
CP Bakori urged residents to exercise caution when engaging domestic and private security workers, stressing that proper background checks remain critical to preventing insider-facilitated crimes.
The Kano State Police Command commended its officers for the swift recovery and appreciated members of the public for their support and information, which continue to aid crime-fighting efforts across the State.
