The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn an earlier invitation extended to Alhaji Lamido Sanusi in connection with the violent disruption that marred the Sallah Day celebration in Kano State on March 30, 2025.
In a statement issued by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the police explained that the decision to withdraw the invitation was made following consultations with key stakeholders.
The move is also in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) resolve to avoid actions that could be perceived as politically motivated.
“Instead of appearing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja as initially requested, officers from the Force Intelligence Department have now been directed by the IGP to visit Kano and obtain Sanusi’s statement on the incident.

“Tensions in Kano flared after both Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—who are at the centre of a protracted emirship tussle—were said to have planned separate Durbar festivals, a revered tradition featuring horse processions.
In anticipation of unrest, Kayode Egbetokun, the IGP, deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Abubakar Sadiq, to broker peace with the two factions and the Kano State Government.
“It was reportedly agreed that neither of the rival emirs would hold a Durbar or ride horses on Sallah Day to maintain public order,” the statement reads.
The Police also noted that, following Eid prayers, Sanusi reportedly mounted a horse and led a procession, defying the truce.
The procession was accompanied by a group of local vigilantes. The procession triggered a clash involving local youths, which resulted in the death of one Usman Sagiru and left several others injured.
The police said they had warned both Sanusi and Bayero against any provocative displays, citing security concerns.
“Investigations into the incident have since commenced, and several individuals have been arrested.
“While Alhaji Sanusi’s invitation has been suspended, the police emphasized that all parties found culpable in the breach of peace will be brought to justice,” it added.
The Force reiterated its commitment to neutrality, justice, and professionalism in handling the case.
