The late Hannatu Joseph Dechi Gomwalk, wife of the former Commissioner of Police and first Military Administrator of the then Benue/Plateau State, Joseph Dechi Gomwalk, was honoured on Thursday during a solemn service of songs held at St. Piran’s Anglican Communion, Jos, Plateau State.
Born on April 2, 1939, Mama Hannatu passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, service, and commitment to family and faith.
Her life was deeply intertwined with the history of Plateau State, especially following the tragic execution of her husband 49 years ago.
Gomwalk’s tenure is recalled as a period of early state-building, and his memory remains a point of pride for many residents.
The service of songs drew family members, friends, church leaders, and community stakeholders who gathered to celebrate a life described as gentle, strong, and unwavering in her devotion to God and humanity.
Delivering the sermon, Chimeziem Kingsley Anukum urged the congregation to reflect on the essence of true friendship and sacrifice, noting that the only friend who can die for humanity is the Lord Jesus Christ.
He stressed that the service was not for the dead but for the living, reminding those in attendance that life is fleeting and must be lived in accordance with the teachings of Christ.
According to him, “Mama Hannatu lived a life worthy of emulation, marked by dignity, compassion, and a calm spirit that inspired those around her.”
Bitrus Shalangwa, brother of the deceased, described her as a pillar of strength who upheld the memory and values of her late husband while raising her family with grace despite the painful circumstances surrounding his death.
