Twenty-four prominent Nigerians have expanded the mandate of the GoNigeria Initiative beyond voter mobilisation to include advocacy for electoral reform, freedom of speech, judicial reform, and improved security, warning that Nigeria’s democracy risks remaining merely procedural without deeper institutional reforms.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the coalition convened by Stanbic IBTC Bank founder Atedo Peterside and comprising figures such as Bishop Matthew Kukah, Muhammadu Sanusi II, Aisha Yesufu, and Folarin Falana said building a durable democracy requires credible elections, protected civil liberties, an independent judiciary, and the safety of lives and property.

Dangote accuses petrol importers of fresh sabotage

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has accused “unpatriotic and unscrupulous individuals” of orchestrating a coordinated misinformation campaign to undermine its $20 billion facility and sustain Nigeria’s long-standing dependence on imported fuel. The company denied claims that it imports finished petrol into the country, describing the allegations as false and part of a deliberate attempt to protect entrenched interests in the petroleum import business.
In a strongly worded statement, the refinery said it had identified those allegedly behind the campaign and would reveal their identities at the appropriate time, while also accusing some actors of previously benefiting from controversial refinery rehabilitation deals linked to state-owned facilities. The development highlights renewed tensions within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector as the Dangote Refinery positions itself as a transformative force aimed at reducing fuel imports and reshaping the downstream market.

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked head coach Thomas Frank after less than eight months in charge, following a 2–1 home defeat to Newcastle that left the club just five points above the Premier League relegation zone. The North London side sit 16th in the table and are without a win in their last eight league matches, their worst run since October 2008. Fans booed Frank and chanted for his dismissal during Tuesday’s loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The club has not yet announced a replacement, with the search for a new manager expected to dominate discussions in the coming days. Spurs face crucial fixtures ahead as they look to reverse their slide and avoid being dragged further into the relegation battle.
El-Rufai alleges plot to possible politically-motivated arrest, detention upon his return to Nigeria

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has warned of a possible politically-motivated arrest and detention upon his return to Nigeria from abroad. In a February 10, 2026 letter marked “Confidential Briefing Memo”, El-Rufai alleged that plans had been concluded to detain him on fabricated charges, linking the threat to his withdrawal from the Tinubu administration in August 2023 and his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He claimed that since leaving the party, he and his close allies have been repeatedly investigated by security and anti-corruption agencies, describing the actions as targeted harassment. El-Rufai, currently outside the country, did not specify the exact charges he fears but suggested that the investigations could escalate into unwarranted detention, raising concerns about the politicization of state agencies.
