Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, infrastructure development and strategic engagement.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic ties and expanding mutually beneficial partnerships between both countries.
The renewed commitment was expressed during a courtesy visit by Zhou Hongyou, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, to Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at his office on Tuesday.
During the meeting, both sides highlighted the depth and longevity of Nigeria–China relations, noting the extensive collaboration between the two countries in areas such as trade, infrastructure development and strategic partnership.
According to a statement by Ebienfa, Nigeria was described as one of China’s most important partners in Africa, with Chinese-backed projects visible across multiple sectors of the Nigerian economy, including transportation, power, construction and industrial development.
It also noted that discussions also emphasised the importance of strengthening diplomatic capacity and mutual understanding through reciprocal visits, study tours and exposure programmes for officials of both countries.
“Particular attention was given to short-term and specialised training initiatives in governance, public administration, strategic communication and public diplomacy, which are designed to enhance institutional effectiveness and experience-sharing.
“Chinese representatives drew attention to ongoing and planned training programmes coordinated by leading academic institutions in China, notably Peking University, aimed at fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange among developing countries”, the statement said.
These programmes, both sides noted, have contributed to building professional networks and strengthening technical expertise among participating officials.
In addition, the Chinese informed the Ministry of plans to commemorate the Chinese New Year as well as the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China.
Both parties agreed on the need for coordinated media engagement and unified messaging ahead of the celebrations scheduled for February 10, 2026, to reinforce public awareness and understanding of the enduring partnership between the two nations.
