A joint committee of the National Assembly on the Army has approved a N1.5 trillion budget for the Nigerian Army for 2026, after expressing satisfaction with the proposal and pledging to support its implementation.
Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, disclosed this following a joint budget defence session with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, in Abuja.
“After listening to the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff, all members have expressed satisfaction with it,” Yar’Adua said.
“However, members of the joint committee also noted that the major challenge is the delay in the release of funds, a matter affecting several ministries, departments, and agencies.
“I want to assure the Chief of Army Staff that we are committed to collaborating with him to ensure success. The Army is critical to our nation’s security, and we will support you with everything you need,” he added.

Aminu Balele, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Army, commended Shaibu and personnel of the Nigerian Army for what he described as their patriotism and commitment in the fight against insurgency and the protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
He assured that the committee would continue to advocate for the timely release of funds to enable the Army to carry out its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
Balele also pledged that the committee would sustain its oversight functions diligently.
“As we conclude the 2026 budget defence, we understand the challenges associated with budget implementation. We will continue to push for the timely release of funds so that the Army can fulfil its mandate,” he said.
