Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on the Federal Government to adopt tougher and more coordinated military measures following the killing of more than 160 people in parts of Kwara State.
Kwankwaso’s reaction came on Wednesday in response to reports of a deadly attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Nuku Local Government Area, where gunmen suspected to be terrorists unleashed violence that left scores of residents dead, and many families shattered.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, the former Kano State governor described the incident as a “barbaric massacre”. He warned that Nigeria could not afford to downplay the growing threat posed by violent groups.
“I am deeply saddened and horrified by the reported massacre of at least 162 innocent lives in the communities of Woro and Nuku in Kwara State,” Kwankwaso said. “This barbaric attack is condemnable in the strongest terms. It was carried out by terrorist elements that must not be tolerated or allowed to fester in any part of our nation.”

He expressed concern that insecurity, once largely associated with specific regions, is spreading into areas previously considered peaceful, placing increasing pressure on the nation’s security forces.
“As I have consistently warned, the Federal Government cannot afford to treat these developments lightly,” he noted. “These violent groups are steadily expanding their reach into regions that were once peaceful and secure. With each passing day, the burden on our armed forces grows heavier, and the need for decisive, coordinated action becomes more urgent.”
The Kwara attack adds to a series of violent incidents across the country that have renewed public debate about the effectiveness of current security strategies and the capacity of the military to contain terrorism and banditry.
Kwankwaso also extended condolences to those affected by the tragedy. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the entire people of Kwara State, and the state government during this profound tragedy. May God grant the departed eternal rest and comfort all who mourn,” he said.
As investigations continue into the killings, residents and community leaders have called on the Federal Government to urgently reinforce security presence in the affected areas to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among local populations.
