More than 270 students from 19 Lagos schools gathered for the first Flourishing House Gospel Music Concert, a faith-based platform created to support youth expression and offer protection against rising negative social pressures facing teenagers. The event brought together choral groups, solo drummers, and spoken word performers in an effort to provide a safe space for young people.
Pastor Adeleke Adetuyi said the aim is to “catch them young so they don’t fall into the wrong hands,” noting the number of students in Lagos who do not have structured outlets. He said the turnout shows a strong need for a platform where students can build confidence and express their gifts.
The learning impact was highlighted by Odiru Oghenevwede, an officer from Lagos State Education District 5, who said the concert supports psychomotor growth. He explained that the students gain skills through coordination, rehearsals, and stage engagement, which can help them in future activities within and outside school.
Teachers at the event also pointed to the need for guidance. Akere Karimat Abiodun said the concert provides a channel for students to express their talent in a “godly way,” but stressed the need to keep academics as the main priority. Pastor Obinna Ugenyi of RCCG Youth Province 14 said the mix of schoolwork and creative development supports balanced growth. He noted that each student has a gift and that support systems are necessary to help them develop.
Organisers said that outstanding students will be recognised in their schools. Rewards will include musical instruments and small scholarships, instead of trophies. The goal is to encourage sustained involvement and create a trusted yearly platform for youth talent in Lagos.
