Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has rewarded Team Bayelsa N20 million cash gift in appreciation of their remarkable performance at the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games 2024, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Team Bayelsa finished second on the overall medals table, clinching nearly 200 medals across various sporting events, behind champions Team Delta, who retained their crown as the overall winners of the festival.

Governor Diri made a surprise appearance at the closing ceremony held at the MKO Abiola Stadium and was accompanied by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali. The governor addressed the team, praising their grit and competitive spirit.
“I am very happy with your performance in the Games. It shows the spirit of the true Bayelsan. So, I am dropping N20 million for you now to appreciate your determination and resilience,” he announced.
Governor Diri further charged the athletes to begin preparations in earnest for the next edition of the National Sports Festival, Coal City Games Enugu 2026, pledging continued support for the team’s development and success on the national stage.
