Mohammed Bello Shehu, a lawmaker representing Fagge Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the worsening environmental challenges confronting several communities in his constituency.
He said that the call became necessary as the residents of the communities are virtually being cut off from their daily socio-economic activities, as erosion has taken over many of the communities.
Mohammed stated this Thursday, while speaking with Journalists nd other key stakeholders drawn from his constituency, on his performance since he was elected into the Green Chamber two years ago.
The lawmaker, particularly, mentioned the Kurna-Konar Gogo Erosion problem that has been dragging on for over two decades and requires urgent Federal Government intervention to address.
He disclosed that addressing the challenge becomes imperative if the government does not want to wake up one day and discover that most of the houses in the area are washed away by the raging erosion.
Commenting on some of the efforts he has been making since being elected to improve the socio-economic well-being of his constituents, the lawmaker revealed that a scholarship value of over N300 million has been secured for hundreds of students at all levels of education.
” While I was campaigning, I promised to deliver programmes that will address the educational needs of our people. In this regard, I am happy to announce that in the 2024/2025 year, over 3500 students have benefited from the scholarship scheme that I instituted.
” The beneficiaries of the scheme are drawn from all levels of education. These range from those who sat for NECO, WAEC, and those doing their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
“Within the period under review, the sum of N300 million has so far been extended in funding the scholarship programmes. Also, during the period, we have also funded the education of 25 students from the constituency, at the Nigerian Law School”, he explained.
Also, commenting on an initiative for supporting the livelihood of people in his constituency, Mohammed said that he has provided Industrial Sewing Machines to clusters of Taloirs within the constituency.
” You know that one of the main occupations which most households in Fagge communities are known for is tailoring, and in supporting them as I promised during our campaign, I have since provided Industrial sewing machines to many of them.
” Going forward, I have already started making efforts to get the tailors formed into functional clusters, which will be registered with the CAC, and also work with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council to have their products linked to local and international garment markets.
” By the time we conclude this move, many of our youths will be employed, and have a means of livelihood that will be sustainable, and dignifying”, he stated.
