The Federal Government has opened applications for a new cohort of participants under the National Health Fellows (NHF) Programme, an initiative designed to strengthen primary healthcare systems across the country.
The programme invites qualified young Nigerians to apply as the next group of fellows who will support ongoing efforts to improve access to care at the community level.
The NHF Programme was established to address persistent gaps within the healthcare system by training and deploying young professionals to local health authorities. Fellows are expected to support community-level interventions and contribute to activities focused on improving health outcomes. The initiative is supported by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The programme targets Nigerians aged 25 to 35 who hold degrees in health sciences, social sciences, or related fields. Selected applicants will receive structured training, mentorship, and field placement in all 774 local government areas. During their placement, fellows will work directly with local teams to promote healthier communities and provide support to primary healthcare initiatives.
The NHF has become a significant part of the government’s wider strategy to build a stronger primary healthcare workforce and equip young Nigerians with skills that respond to real public health needs. Speaking on the programme, the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said, “This groundbreaking initiative is set to develop a pipeline of healthcare leaders through strategic capacity building, professional development and a capstone field engagement.”
As the application deadline approaches, the NHF Programme is calling on eligible candidates to submit their applications. The programme aims to build a growing network of young leaders committed to reducing preventable diseases and supporting a more resilient health system from the grassroots.
The National Health Fellows programme brings together young professionals from various fields, including health and health-related areas, information technology, and social sciences. Fellows will receive training, mentorship, leadership exposure, and opportunities to engage with best practices within Nigeria’s health sector. The goal is to develop a cadre of skilled health leaders who can drive change and innovation.
The National Health Fellows is a programme of the Government of Nigeria, led through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative SWAp Coordination Office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Interested applicants should visit the National Health Fellows website to apply before 30th November 2025.
