There was a heavy security presence and a large turnout of voters at Kabusa 001 polling unit in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as residents trooped out to cast their ballots.
Olusola Odumosu, Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, was seen moving across polling units with his officers to ensure law and order.
Officials on ground said voting commenced at about 8:45am.
Speaking with BusinessDay, Tolu John, the Presiding Officer, said the polling unit has 2,044 registered voters.
“Accreditation and voting started at about 8:45am. We have 2,044 registered voters here, and so far over 200 accredited voters have cast their ballots,” John said.
He, however, raised concerns over the conduct of some party agents.
“Some party agents are trying to influence voters and that earlier caused minor disruptions, but we have addressed the situation,” he said.
John also disclosed that a few voters initially experienced challenges with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
“Some voters could not be captured by the BVAS.
“We are currently reconfiguring the device to rectify the issue. Aside from that, the process has been smooth,” he added.
Meanwhile, an election observer, Ezeh Chukwu of the Centre for Strategy, Ethics and Values, described the process as orderly.
“Generally, the election process here has been peaceful. Voters are conducting themselves in an orderly manner and security presence is commendable,” Chukwu said.
