Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, has charged the newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to uphold discipline within the Nigeria Police Force and drive reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s security architecture.
The police chief gave the charge on Monday during the decoration of eight senior officers elevated to the rank of DIG at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He urged them to provide strategic leadership and ensure policing operations remain responsive to evolving security challenges.
Disu described the promotion as more than a ceremonial exercise, noting that elevation to the rank of DIG represents recognition of decades of dedication, professional excellence and leadership within the Force.
He urged the newly promoted officers to provide strategic direction in policing operations, strengthen internal discipline and support ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency and professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force.
The police chief also tasked them with ensuring that policing strategies remain responsive to emerging security threats across the country.
According to him, their new roles demand strong leadership in intelligence-led policing, operational coordination and collaboration with other security agencies, while maintaining the highest standards of accountability.
Disu further emphasised the importance of rebuilding public trust and confidence in policing, urging the officers to inspire professionalism within the Force and ensure effective service delivery to citizens.
The IGP also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for the Nigeria Police Force and acknowledged the role of the Police Service Commission in ensuring transparency and professionalism in the promotion process.
He equally commended the families of the newly decorated officers for their sacrifices and encouragement over the years, noting that their support had contributed significantly to the officers’ successful careers.
The newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police are Zachariah Fera Achinyan, Zango Ibrahim Baba, Isyaku Mohammed, Margaret Agebe Ochalla, Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha and Umar Shehu Nadada.
With the promotions, the officers now join the IGP and the Force Secretary, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olabode Adeleye Akinbamilowo, as members of the new Force Management Team responsible for overseeing the administration and operations of the Nigeria Police Force.
The ceremony attracted several prominent dignitaries from government, security agencies and civil society.
Among those in attendance were Kabir Rurum, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, Temitope Ilori, Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Smart Adeyemi, a former lawmaker in the Senate and Danladi Kefas, a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
