…Watchers foresee defection
Letep Dabang has officially resigned from his role as Political Adviser to Caleb Manaseh Mutfwang, the governor of Plateau State. The resignation, effective immediately, was communicated through a letter dated June 30, 2025, and addressed to the Governor via the Chief of Staff.
In the letter obtained by BusinessDay on Wednesday in Jos, Dabang expressed appreciation for the trust and opportunity granted to him to serve in the current administration.
He also acknowledged his involvement not just as a political aide but as the Director General of the 2023 Plateau State PDP Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Council, which played a pivotal role in Mutfwang’s victory.
“I appreciate the opportunities I have had to serve and contribute to the government of the day”,; Dabang said in his letter. He went on to wish the administration continued success in delivering its mandate to the people of Plateau State.
Though Dabang did not disclose specific reasons for his resignation, political observers consider the move significant, given his history of political realignment.
Once a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), he served as the party’s state chairman during the administration of former Governor Simon Lalong before switching allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he served as the chairman of the PDP presidential and gubernatorial campaign team.
His decision to step down is already fueling speculation about a potential return to the APC. Sources close to the former adviser suggest that he may be positioning himself for a strategic role ahead of the 2027 general elections, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Dabang’s resignation is expected to cause ripples within the political framework of the Mutfwang administration. As one of the key strategists during the last elections, his exit could impact the governor’s political calculations moving forward, especially as the PDP consolidates power in the state.
The Plateau State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the resignation. Meanwhile, political watchers are keeping a close eye on Dabang’s next move, which could redefine alliances in the state’s political landscape.
