Chairmen and councillors of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State have asked Bola Ahmed Tinubu to run for a second term as President of Nigeria.
This comes after the state House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, and now controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the defection of 17 members last week, had equally called on the President to run for a second term.
The APC also controls 20 of 23 local government areas in Rivers State following its victory at the August 30 Local Government Elections in the state. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won the remaining three in a move some observers describe as “mathematics of convenience.”

The chairmen and councillors, who met in Port Harcourt on December 8, 2025, under the aegis of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Rivers State chapter, announced their support for President Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
Chidi Lloyd, Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, during the meeting, moved the motion, basing the support for Tinubu on what he described as “the exceptional leadership of the President and the special interest of the Tinubu administration in the development of Rivers State.”
He said the President has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to the development of the nation.
Thomas Bariere, Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, seconded the motion endorsing President Tinubu for a second term, adding that “The president has demonstrated good leadership and commitment to the development.”

Allwell Ihunda, Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, said the decision by the local government chairmen to endorse President Tinubu was a collective desire for growth and development in Rivers State.
“Our president has demonstrated good leadership and commitment to the development of our dear country. As we can see, our president has some special interest in Rivers State. Through infrastructure development, the East-West Road is under reconstruction by the current administration of our dear leader, His Excellency,” he said.
Gloria Johnson, speaking for the vice chairmen of the local councils, said women make up 80% of voters at the grassroots. She said, “We haven’t just come to make a promise, but we are going to make a pledge to Mr President that in 2017, we, the 23 vice chairmen, we will get to the grassroots, bearing in mind that 80% of the voting strength lies with the women.”
