Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted that Friday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea is his immediate priority, despite the Europa League final that could rescue the club’s dismal season.
United currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just above the relegation zone, in what has been their worst campaign in the competition’s history. Since taking charge in November, Amorim has won just six of his 25 league matches.
While the Europa League final offers Man United a potential lifeline, both a major European trophy and qualification for next season’s Champions League, Amorim is adamant that his focus remains firmly on getting a result at Stamford Bridge.
“We cannot spend eight days or nine days without a game. That is a bad thing for the final,” said Amorim. “The best way is to face the game like we should face the game — it is to win the game. We need to perform; we need to win points in the Premier League, and that is the feeling.”
The Portuguese tactician also dismissed the notion of resting players ahead of the final, stressing that the outcome against Chelsea will not affect his selections for the European showdown.
“The players have to understand that if you play or don’t play against Chelsea, it means nothing to the final. That is important,” he added. “I am just preparing for the Chelsea game. That is my focus, and we want to win and to perform.”
United’s defensive crisis continues to deepen, with Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, and teenage centre-back Leny Yoro all expected to miss the trip to London. Their availability for the final remains uncertain.
