Senator Neda Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, was on Tuesday formally received into the All Progressives Congress (APC) by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, had announced his departure from the Labour Party (LP) on June 12 during an event in Benin City.
He cited internal leadership disputes within the LP as the driving force behind his decision to leave the party.
His defection was made official during plenary after a letter he addressed to the Senate President was read on the Senate floor.
In the letter, Imasuen explained that his decision followed wide consultations with constituents and political actors in Edo South. According to him, they encouraged him to join a party that could offer more political relevance and national visibility.
“This decision follows extensive consultations with my constituents, political stakeholders and supporters across Edo South Senatorial District, who have expressed their desire to have me enter a party that will give our people national prominence and political relevance,” the letter read in part.
He also stated that his move to the APC is in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda and reaffirmed his dedication to his constituents and national development.
Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio formally welcomed Imasuen into the APC fold with a wordplay on his former party’s name.
“Distinguished Senator Neda Imasuen, you shall no longer ‘Labour’ in vain. Your defection has been well documented,” Akpabio said.
“You may now graciously move to your new party. Kindly approach the chair for a handshake,” he added, drawing applause from fellow lawmakers.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also acknowledged the development, congratulating Imasuen and encouraging him to contribute actively to the growth of the APC and the advancement of Nigeria.
