Ambrose Alli University (AAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the news of the death of the immediate past Vice- Chancellor of the institution, Cordelia Agbebaku.
Agbebaku aged 56 was reported to have died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) at about 5 pm on Thursday. She was said to have died of a cancer related illness.
Edward Aihevba, the Public Relations Officer of the University who confirmed the incident to newsmen, however said they were yet to get full details of her death.
“The University is distraught, we are confused and sad. We are yet to get full details of her death. We have no details yet, we have not confirmed anything, but we heard she died of a protracted ailment.
“But at the moment, the Vice-Chancellor and the management team are paying a visit to the family. It is only after all that that there will be any statement at all,” he added.
The late who hailed form Esan South-West Local Government Area of the state was born in 1961.
A professor of Law, was appointed acting vice-chancellor May 2, 2011 and was made substantive vice-chancellor by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole on February 10, 2014 till 2016 when her tenure expired.
She was the Dean of the Faculty of Law before she was appointed vice-chancellor.
She was one of the pioneer law students and of AAU, in 1981.
Unconfirmed sources had it that the former VC had been on sabbatical at the United States of America since last year after leaving office.
The late academic is survived by her husband, Philip Agbebaku of the Department of Political Science in the university and children.
