Akinbinu Ibifaka, a seasoned lawyer and fitness entrepreneur, is redefining wellness in Nigeria by driving inclusion and empowerment through fitness.
Ibifaka shared her transitioned journey from practising lawyer into fitness, where she now drives inclusion and empowers women and youth through wellness.
With over a decade of experience in the fitness industry, Ibifaka —popularly known as Fabila—has emerged as a leading expert in Africa’s wellness space.
A lawyer by training with a master’s degree (LL.M.) in Energy Law and Policy from the University of Dundee, Ibifaka once practiced at a reputable energy law firm.
“I had a growing passion for dance, wellness, and movement,” she revealed, recounting her journey from law to fitness.”
An important moment came during her professional dance training in New York, where she encountered Zumba Fitness, the world’s largest dance fitness program.
What began as a passion soon evolved into a purposeful career shift.
In just four years, she rose to become the first African woman appointed as a Zumba Education Specialist (ZES)—a global recognition awarded by Zumba Fitness LLC.
The role authorizes her to train and certify Zumba instructors in Nigeria and internationally, giving her a powerful platform to amplify African talent on the global fitness stage.
Transitioning from a conventional career like law into the more fluid and less traditional fitness industry came with doubt, stigma, and minimal institutional support.
“There were doubts and resistance, especially as a woman balancing career, family, and entrepreneurship in a male-dominated business environment,” she said.

Despite this, Ibifaka stayed focused, choosing instead to build tangible success stories through those she trained—especially women and youth who have gone on to create their own fitness ventures.
She invested in global training, attending prestigious dance institutions like Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey in the U.S., and earned multiple Zumba certifications.
These, coupled with her legal and business acumen, enabled her to build Fabilas Fitness, a structured and impactful wellness brand.
Ibifaka has taught masterclasses and trained over 200 instructors across Nigeria, Africa, and other continents, including India, the U.S., and Europe.
“Fitness is not just a lifestyle—it’s a tool for income generation, youth empowerment, and community transformation,” she noted.
She also founded *Shape Up Naija Fitness Carnival*, a topnotch fitness event that has since become a blueprint for others in Nigeria.
Initiatives like this are part of her broader goal to normalize fitness as an essential part of national development.
With every Zumba instructor trained and every community initiative launched, Ibifaka is steadily reshaping the narrative around fitness in Nigeria—driving inclusion, creating opportunities, and empowering the next generation through movement.
