The Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists attempted to overrun a task force Brigade, but troops repelled and killed more than a dozen attackers in the Damboa local government area of the southern part of Borno State Friday morning, sources said.
Three persons lost their lives, a score of soldiers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
BusinessDay gathered that the terrorists came in large numbers at midnight to attack Damboa Taskforce Brigade shooting sporadically at troops.
A local hunter who spoke to our Correspondent noted that the gun battle started at 12:05am, and lasted until past 3: a.m.
The source added that the attackers damaged some structures in the barracks due to rocket launchers into the Brigade, but they couldn’t penetrate the barracks.
“It was terrifying, and they kept shooting anti-aircraft guns and launching rocket-propelled grenades RPGs. We lost three persons, including a soldier, one member, cjtf and a civilian. More than 20 soldiers were wounded due to several RPG fires in the barracks.
The terrorists fired multiple RPGs into the town, targeting a military base,” the source said.
Another source who spoke anonymously said troops who resisted the RPGs responded after leaving the terrorists to exhaust their firepower.
“Air support was deployed, and after three hours of combat, the insurgents fled with heavy casualties; the attack occurred earlier around 12:05 am. In Damboa, at least 16 terrorists were brutally killed in the operation.”
