Arsenal teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri has ignited excitement across the Nigerian football community after publicly acknowledging his Nigerian roots during his loan spell with Ligue 1 giants Olympique Marseille.
Currently on loan in France, the highly rated midfielder spoke with pride about his heritage during an interview, comments that have reignited speculation over a possible future with Nigeria’s Super Eagles, despite his involvement with England at the youth level.

“Yes, I know. I’m Nigerian, and I am here to help the team as much as possible,” Nwaneri said when asked about former Nigerian internationals Taye Taiwo and Wilson Oruma, both of whom previously featured for Marseille.
Born on 21 March 2007 at Whittington Hospital in Islington, London, Nwaneri is the son of an Igbo Nigerian father and an English-French mother. His background makes him eligible to represent Nigeria, England or France at the international level. While he has featured for England’s youth teams, the 18-year-old is yet to receive a senior call-up to the Three Lions.
Nwaneri joined Marseille on loan from Arsenal in January 2026 after a summer of heavy investment at the Emirates Stadium limited his pathway to regular first-team football. Despite signing a long-term contract extension with the Gunners until 2030, the arrivals of Eberechi Eze (£67m) and Noni Madueke (£48.5m) reduced his chances under manager Mikel Arteta.
The move to Ligue 1 has already paid dividends. Nwaneri made an immediate impression in France, scoring on his league debut and quickly endearing himself to the Marseille faithful with his confidence and technical quality.
He made 12 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions earlier this season, scoring once in the Carabao Cup, but opted for a temporary switch in search of consistent minutes to aid his development.
Nwaneri’s strong start in France, combined with the open affirmation of his Nigerian identity, has intensified conversations among Nigerian fans and football stakeholders, hopeful that the prodigious midfielder could one day commit his international future to the Super Eagles.
