Football fans across Nigeria took centre stage on Sunday night as MTN Nigeria transformed the classic Premier League clash between Manchester United and Arsenal into a carnival, hosting watch parties that brought supporters together from Lagos to Abuja and beyond.
While Manchester United edged Arsenal 3–2 in a thrilling encounter in England, the spotlight locally was on the communal viewing experience, as thousands of fans gathered at MTN-hosted venues to watch the match in a vibrant atmosphere.
Across Lagos, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Abuja and Ogun State, supporters turned out in club colours, chanting, debating and reacting collectively to every major moment of the game. Giant LED screens, stadium-grade surround sound and interactive fan zones ensured that the distance between West Africa and England felt almost non-existent.
At the flagship Lagos watch party, the atmosphere was electric, with fans erupting in celebration and despair in equal measure as the game swung from one momentum shift to another.
On the pitch, Arsenal started strongly, dominating possession and pressing United with their fluid attacking style. The Gunners took an early lead through a composed finish from their captain, but United responded with grit and efficiency.
Michael Carrick’s men grew into the contest by exploiting transitions, equalising just before the break. The second half produced end-to-end football, with United taking the lead through a thunderous long-range strike, Arsenal fighting back with a late equaliser, and Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha ultimately netting the winner for the Red Devils.
Tactically, Arsenal’s inverted full-backs caused early problems, but United’s midfield resilience, anchored by a standout performance in the pivot, gradually neutralised the threat, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
For many fans at the watch parties, the result was secondary to the shared experience. “The energy here in Abuja is incredible,” said Tunde Afolabi, a lifelong Manchester United supporter. “I’m glad we grabbed the three points. Watching the game with fellow fans like this makes the win a memorable one and I can say the hospitality is top-notch.”
In Port Harcourt, Chiamaka Okechukwu, Arsenal supporter, echoed the sentiment, despite her team’s defeat. “I’ve been to many screenings, but this MTN watch party is different. The clarity of the broadcast and the prizes we won during halftime made it a complete experience. Arsenal showed heart today, and being here in Owerri with my friends to see it was special,” she said.
The nationwide watch parties are part of MTN Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to football development and fan engagement, aimed at decentralising premium matchday experiences to cities and communities across the country.
