Nigerian writer and editor, Chisom Winifred, has won the 2025 Fosseway Writers Flash Fiction Competition in the United Kingdom for her short story Children with No Angels. The annual competition, organised by the long-established Fosseway Writers group in Newark, Nottinghamshire, invited global entries on the theme “Envelope.”
The entries were judged by Anne Howkins, who commended the high standard of submissions. According to her, “The judge managed to find five entries which were slightly more distinguished, by no more than a hair’s breadth, from the other very capable entrants. The quality of writing and imagination was stunning.”
Founded in Newark, Fosseway Writers provides a platform for writers at all stages of their careers. The group supports both local and international voices through workshops, competitions, and networking opportunities aimed at strengthening the writing community.
Speaking after the announcement, Winifred expressed appreciation for the recognition. “I am honoured to have my story recognised in this competition. Children with No Angels reflects experiences and stories I feel compelled to share, and this recognition motivates me to continue writing and publishing globally,” she said.
Winifred’s writing covers fiction and literary criticism. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Lincoln, where she became the first postgraduate student to have her work published in The Lincoln Review, the university’s international literary journal.
She is also the author of IJEM (2018), a collection of short stories featuring commentaries from Nigerian experts. Later this year, two of her new short stories will appear in Favourites, an anthology to be published by St James Writers Grimsby in collaboration with Hammond House Publishing.
