West Africa is set to enhance the capacity of national human rights institutions in the sub region in line with international best practices.
This is contained in a statement from the African Union Commission (AUC), signed by Calixte Mbari, officer-in-charge, Department of Political Affairs, AUC, in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) and the AUC will hold a workshop for human rights institutions in West Africa. The workshop is expected to hold from September 21 to 23 in Abuja.
It is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the institutions to document and report on human rights violations at the national levels.
It is also aimed at strengthening the relationship between human rights institutions in the West African region and the AU organs to facilitate the implementation of the Human Rights Strategy for Africa.
Other objectives of the workshop include examining the readiness of the institutions in contributing to mandatory reports on international treaties.
The meeting is expected to develop a roadmap for facilitating collaboration between the AUC and sub-regional human rights institutions.
Participants at the meeting will include experts from AU organs with human rights mandate, representatives of the African Network of National Human Rights Institutions and UN agencies.
