Val Kilmer, the versatile actor celebrated for his performances in blockbuster films such as ‘Top Gun,’ ‘Batman Forever,’ and ‘The Doors,’ passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65 from pneumonia in Los Angeles.
His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed the news to U.S. media, noting that her father died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. Kilmer’s death marks a profound loss for the entertainment industry, where his four-decade career left an enduring imprint on cinema and popular culture.

Kilmer’s journey in Hollywood was defined by his remarkable range and dedication to his craft. Rising to prominence in the 1980s, he captivated audiences as the cocky yet charismatic fighter pilot “Iceman” in Top Gun, a role that helped cement the film as a cultural touchstone.
Kilmer went on to star in fantasy Willow and crime thriller Kill Me Again – both alongside British actress Joanne Whalley, who he married in 1988. The couple had two children.
He portrayed Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s ‘The Doors’ earning him widespread critical acclaim. He played the role of the caped crusader in ‘Batman Forever,’ showcasing his talents in the superhero genre. Beyond these high-profile roles, he worked in independent films like ‘The Salton Sea’.
Mercedes Kilmer revealed that her father had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, a battle he fought and ultimately overcame. However, the tracheotomy surgery required during his treatment permanently altered his voice, significantly curtailing his acting career.

Despite this setback, Kilmer’s resilience shone through as he returned to the screen in 2022 to reprise his role as Iceman alongside Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick.”
