The United States Embassy in Abuja has suspended routine consular services and rescheduled visa and citizen appointments after warning of possible protests in the Nigerian capital.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the embassy said it would remain closed for routine business until Monday, March 9, 2026, as a precautionary measure amid heightened security concerns.

The decision affects visa interviews scheduled for March 4 and 5as well as American Citizen Services appointments set for March 5. Officials said those appointments have now been moved to dates next week.
Applicants have been advised to check their email or their AVITS account for updated appointment details.
“Visa applicants should check their email or AVITS account for their new appointment date,” the embassy said in the notice. “American Citizen Services applicants should also check their email for further information.”
The embassy added that applicants who do not receive a new appointment date should contact officials through the Visa Navigator platform for assistance.
The move comes after the mission warned United States citizens in Abuja of the potential for demonstrations linked to rising tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran. Previous protests in the capital have at times led to clashes between demonstrators and Nigerian security forces.

While the embassy did not confirm that protests would take place, it said the temporary closure was intended to reduce risk and ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
Officials urged the public to continue monitoring the embassy’s website and social media channels for further updates on the situation and on the resumption of normal consular services.
