The campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife sealed off one week ago by Osun state government for non remittance of taxes has been reopened.
Osun state government had last week Wednesday sealed off the university, alleging that a sum of N1.8 billion deducted from the institution’s staff salary as withholding tax was not remitted to its coffers.
OAU management, while reacting to government’s claim, denied withholding the deductions, but said it under deducted taxes from staff salaries.
OAU management put the amount it owed Osun government in unremmited taxes at N287 million.
After meetings between the two parties, a sum of N25 million was being paid to government by OAU management, and the payment was confirmed to our correspondent by Special Adviser, Tax Matters to Osun state government, Gbenga Akano.
However, the Institution’s Senate Building, which had been under seal since Wednesday, 2nd May, 2018, it was learnt, was unsealed by some unknown persons very early on Tuesday believed to be staff of Osun State Internal Revenue Service.
Confirming the development, OAU Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abiodun Olanrewaju, said before staff of the university arrived campus on Tuesday, the ‘sealed’ tag fixed on the entrance to the Senate Building has also been removed.
