The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has conferred 10,584 students with first degrees and diplomas, while 5,782 were awarded postgraduate degrees from the School of Postgraduate Studies and 140 will graduate from the UNILAG Business School (ULBS).
Folasade Ogunsola, the vice-chancellor at UNILAG made this known during the 56th convocation ceremonies of the university, when she said, on Tuesday, January 20, we began three days of degree conferment to 16,506 students, of these 10,584 students will receive first degrees and diplomas, 5,782 will be awarded postgraduate degrees from the School of Postgraduate Studies and 140 will graduate from the UNILAG Business School (ULBS).

Other highlights of the convocation ceremonies were the conferment of emeritus professors on James Olowokudejo of the Department of Botany and Duro Oni of the Department of Theatre Arts.
In addition, Akinsanya Osibogun, a distinguished scholar of medicine, was conferred with the title of distinguished professor. Gold medals was awarded to Ayoka Olusakin, professor of Counselling Psychology, and Taiwo Ipaye, director of the Office of Advancement, President of the University of Lagos Women society and former registrar, in recognition of their sustained service to the University and the nation.
The University also conferred honorary degrees on two outstanding Nigerians, Â Jubril Tinubu, and Kanu Agabi, whose lives exemplify hard work, and service.
Tinubu was conferred with the doctor of Business degree, while Agabi, former attorney-general and minister of justice of the federation and former minister of solid minerals development, was awarded the doctor of Laws degree.
The vice-chancellor also announced that the overall best postgraduate student Ph. D Thesis award (who is also the Best Ph. D Thesis in Sciences) was won by Haruna Abubakar (Ph. D – Civil and Environmental Engineering – Structures Option) and Beatrice Zuhunben (Ph. D – Educational Psychology) got the Best Ph. D Thesis in Humanities. The best Ph. D thesis (DBA) from the ULBS was Oyeyemi Adebamowo.
“We have amongst the graduands today, Hammid Taju, who obtained Ph. D in French at youthful age of 78 years,  the oldest graduating student this year, while Oba Sulaimon Adekunle Bamgbade (Olofin of Isheri) obtained MSc Systems Engineering, and is our graduating Royal Father. These are good examples of lifelong learning,” she said.
Ogunsola took the opportunity to thank members of UNILAG’s senate, staff, alumni, partners, and all stakeholders for their continued commitment to the university.
Recounting the success trajectories of the institution, she said, “Last year has seen us make strides in our triple mandate of research, teaching and community service firmly anchored on our vision to increase brand recognition and the impact of the university both nationally and globally.
“The university has continued to strengthen collaborations, expand student exposure to competitions, internships, and global learning opportunities, and deliberately created environments that inspire innovation, critical thinking, and inquiry.”

In addition, she emphasised that the university retained its first position in Nigeria (with UI) in the 2026 Times higher Education ranking placing us in the 801-1000 band globally out of 2,191 institutions,
“A deep dive into the ranking showed Unilag was first in research quality and Industry income. UNILAG also emerged Winner of the Most International African Institution (West Africa) 2025, awarded by The International Education (TINE) at its Africa Summit, for its exceptional impact in advancing international education opportunities,” the VC noted.
