Nigeria’s Super Falcons played out an exciting 0-0 draw against Portugal in a pre-WAFCON friendly on Monday night at the Estádio José Gomes in Lisbon.
Despite arriving in Portugal less than 24 hours before kickoff, the nine-time African champions showed grit and composure, delivering a solid performance against the hosts as preparations continue for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Their opening match at the tournament is scheduled for Sunday, July 6, against Tunisia in Casablanca.
The game started with an early scare for the Super Falcons after a back pass from Christy Ucheibe gifted Diana Silva a chance in the 6th minute, but her effort drifted wide.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Africa’s reigning best, was a standout performer, claiming a high cross in the 9th minute before Francisca Ordega set up Rasheedat Ajibade at the other end, with the captain’s shot nearly beating Ines Pereira in goal.
Nnadozie made a string of crucial saves, including a stunning stop in the 24th minute and three world-class blocks in quick succession early in the second half, denying Jessica Silva, Fatima Pinto, and Andreia Norton.
Rinsola Babajide missed a golden chance before halftime, while Ordega continued to torment the Portuguese defence throughout the second half. Substitutes Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre, and Halimatu Ayinde brought fresh energy into the game as Nigeria pushed for a winner.
Ordega rattled the crossbar in the 70th minute and nearly provided an assist for Onumonu minutes later, but Portugal held firm to keep the game scoreless.
The Super Falcons impressed with their resilient display, leaving the Portuguese fans applauding their effort.
The team will depart for Casablanca on Wednesday ahead of another friendly match against Ghana’s Black Queens on Sunday as they fine-tune preparations for their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
