…moves to the Secretariat with placards
A good number of students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan took the streets early Tuesday morning to protest the renaming of the institution. The students embarked upon the protest due to recent pronouncement by Governor Seyi Makinde, renaming the institution to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The protesters as early as 7am blocked the entrance gates of the institution and also blocked the ever busy Sango -Eleyele Road. The development led to many commuters plying the ever busy Sango-Eleyele Road in Ibadan, stranded.
Hundreds of commuters, residents and travellers plying the road are currently held heavy traffic along the route. Some staff of the institution who managed to get the Polytechnic could not also gain access as the gates are presently under lock and key.
However, the protesting students had moved to the Secretariat gate in large numbers with different placards. They were singing Aluta songs and calling for the reversal of the institution to its old name.
Makinde had last week renamed The Polytechnic Ibadan to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, who was the first principal of the institution. Olunloyo was the governor of old Oyo State between October and December 1983.
