Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has flagged off desilting of drainages in response to the recent flooding incidents in and around Iweka road, Ziks Avenue and others in Onitsha South Local Government Area of the State.
Governor Soludo, who was represented by Onyekachukwu Ibezim, his Deputy at the scenes of the flooding, said the aim was to ensure free flow of rain waters during the raining season.
The governor while inspecting the work after the flag off suggested ways and directives to re-channel some spots which might be the cause of flooding so that flood would move easily without any hitch.

After sighting the machineries and manpower on ground for the work, he commended the Onitsha South Local Government Mayor, Emeka Orji, for his dedication to duty.
Orji said that desilting of drainages is undertaken annually in preparation for the rainy season, saying, “We flagged off with excavator, tools and tippers and I thank God it was very successful and it is ongoing.
“We would do it to the next one, two weeks or months because the Sakamori and drainages in Onitsha South is quite huge. It is not something to be done under one or two days.”
Orji urged residence, business owners and passersby to stop indiscriminate disposal and flight tipping of waste along water/drainage channels across the area, stressing that defaulters if caught would never go unpunished or fined.
