The Nigeria Shippers Council (NSC) has proposed to establish an Inland Container Depot and a Truck Transit Terminal in Edo state to help decongest Lagos port and stimulate economic activities in the state.
Hassan Bello, managing director of the council made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to the state governor, Godwin Obaseki at Government House in Benin-City on Thursday.
Bello said the establishment of the inland container depot have all the trappings of a seaport while the customs would own it and duties would be paid with full economic participation.
While seeking the state government’s collaboration for the successful establishment of the inland container and truck transit terminal, he opined that the projects would open up economic possibilities as well as create more jobs for residents in the state.
He however added that the state government would provide land, building permits, provision of amenities, security and immediately constitute the state Inland Container Deport implementation Committee.
In his response, the state governor, Godwin Obaseki expressed his administration’s readiness to support the Nigeria Shippers Council (NSC) to establish the two projects in the state.
Obaseki said the Inland Container Depot and a Truck Transit Terminal would facilitate diversity in economic activities.
He assured the group of his government’s support, especially as both parties had the same aim of creating more jobs.
“We have made promises to our people and those promises will certainly be kept. Our focus as a government is not on what we say; the emphases is on execution. We decide what we want to do, draw up a timeline for it and put responsible people to monitor the success”.
He added that power would not be a problem as uninterrupted power supply was being developed for industrial parts of the State.
