The recent publication titled “Unions must resist state capture to protect workers’ dignity” (Vanguard, August 28, 2025) grossly misrepresents the facts surrounding the Lagos State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) aborted election scheduled for August 27, 2025.
Contrary to the narrative, a section of disgruntled members of the Association of Senior Civil Service of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Lagos State TUC Chairman, attempted to impose the Secretary, who is not a financial member, to contest against his Chairman. This act clearly contravenes the established election guidelines.
This undemocratic plan was rightly resisted by members who believe it undermines due process, violates constitutional provisions, and compromises both the autonomy of the Congress and the rights of members.
The facts remain clear:
1. The TUC constitution and election guidelines are designed to guarantee fair play, credibility, and transparency.
2. The Secretary’s eligibility is being challenged strictly on constitutional grounds, not on personal or sentimental considerations.
3. Our collective struggle is anchored on respect for due process, adherence to election guidelines, and protection of democratic values.
Our insistence on the due process has been interpreted to imply interference by the state government. The correct position, however, is that no imposition by any affiliate union will be tolerated, as all affiliates are equal.
Our commitment:
We reaffirm our ongoing commitment to:
1. Upholding the constitution and election guidelines.
2. Protecting the rights, welfare, and interests of members.
3. Ensuring transparency, accountability, and credibility in all processes.
