The Senate on Tuesday hailed the Nigerian military over the recent recapture of several towns and communities that had fallen under the control of the radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram, in some parts of the North East. Prompted by a motion of urgent national importance moved by Maina Ma’aji Lawan (APC, Borno North), the upper chamber praised the gallantry of the soldiers for re-taking seized territories from the insurgents. According to him, prior to the new offensive against the terror group, it had subdued some communities, hoisted their flags in the local government headquarters and subjected the people to despicable acts of torture. The senator, whose town, Baga, had been liberated from Boko Haram, commended the army for reclaiming other areas like Monguno, Malam Fatori, Damasak, Konduga, among others. He was upbeat that areas like Bama and Gworza which are still under the control of Boko Haram would be reclaimed in no distant time. “We are solidly behind our troops. We pray that more of these successes will go on. We appreciate their efforts and ask that they continue this patriotic drive to reclaim all Nigerian territories”, he said. Contributing to the motion, Bukar Abba Ibrahim (APC, Yobe East), insisted that regional forces from Chad, Niger Republic and Cameroon should be commended for reclaiming territories occupied by the insurgent group. He was, however, countered by Chris Anyanwu (APGA, Imo East) who stated that it is unpatriotic to give credit to foreign troops to the neglect of Nigerian troops. “Our men have been equipped and they are putting their lives on the line”, she said.
