The Senate on Tuesday was compelled to adjourn sitting until another legislative day, following the death of Ja’afaru Illiyasu, a member of the House of Representatives.
It is a usual tradition for the two chambers of the National Assembly to mourn and suspend plenary whenever a lawmaker dies.
Illiyasu was a first-term lawmaker and until his death, represented Magama/Rijau federal constituency of Niger State. He reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of Monday.
The Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday and observed a minute silence in honour of the deceased and prayed for the repose of his soul.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan had described the death of the lawmaker as shocking and said it was a big loss to the entire National Assembly.
On Tuesday, the motion for the Senate to suspend plenary in honour of the deceased lawmaker was moved by Leader of the Senate, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi and seconded by the minority leader, Enyinanya Abaribe.
The Senate, therefore, adjourned till Wednesday, 4th December 2019 to resume sitting.
