The House of Representatives on Thursday urged Hammed Ali, Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), to stop illegal seizure of goods, especially textile materials and shoes within the country.
The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Aliyu Madaki (APC-Kano) and three other lawmakers.
In his lead debate, Madaki alleged that the illegal practices of Customs personnel, who have “seized in quantum, shoes that were bought from Aba markets and on their to Kano and vice-versa”.
According to him, the illegal operations are now being extended beyond the Kano metropolis and all routes leading to the city.
He argued that the actions, if not checked “are capable of retarding the growth of commerce and trade in Kano, and the quantum of it adverse effect cannot be imagined.”
To this end, the House mandated the Committee on Customs chaired by James Faleke (APC-Lagos) to conduct a detail investigation into the activities of the Service’s personnel on the reported impounding of shoes and textile materials in Kano and routes leading to Kano, and report back its findings within four weeks.
