Real Madrid have started preparations for the upcoming season, with one of their top priorities being to reinforce the left-back position.
With Ferland Mendy frequently sidelined due to injury and Fran García yet to fully convince manager Carlo Ancelotti, the club’s sporting management has decided it’s time to bring in a new first-choice left-back.

Emerging as a leading candidate is Álvaro Carreras, the 22-year-old Galician currently shining for Benfica. Carreras has been one of the standout young players in Europe this season, impressing both in the Portuguese league and the Champions League. His performances have reignited interest at Valdebebas, where he has been on the radar since leaving Real Madrid’s youth system in 2020 to join Manchester United.
According to AS, Benfica have set a price tag of €60 million, but Madrid are exploring an alternative route to reduce the cost.
Manchester United still hold a buy-back clause on Carreras worth just €18 million. The idea being considered is for United to activate that clause and then sell the player to Real Madrid for a fee in the region of €35 million, an arrangement that could benefit all parties.
At the Santiago Bernabéu, Carreras is highly regarded for his attacking qualities, tactical intelligence, and familiarity with the club’s environment. Madrid see him as a player with significant room for growth and the potential to become a key figure in the future.
