A cross section of kids at Project 17’s Children Day celebration
There are more young people in the world than ever before, creating unprecedented potential for economic and social progress. Many of the global challenges to development are especially salient for children and youth.
At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, 193 world leaders committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (or SDGs) to help make the world safer, fairer and more just for everyone.
Unfortunately the world we are inheriting is in crisis. And we must start to realize our own ability to change this.
Project 17 aims to teach adolescents about the Global Goals and we believe this is achievable. We want more young people acting on the goals so the first task is bringing these goals to their knowledge. Through interactive lessons tailored to suit various adolescent age groups, learners get to understand what the Global Goals for Sustainable Development are, why they are important and how they relate to the learner her/himself.
At the last Children day celebration in Nigeria on the 27th of May 2018, Project17 hosted 300 students from secondary schools across Lagos state. The student were from Wahab Folawiyo Senior and Junior school, Ilado community Senior and Junior school, Government Senior and Junior college, Akande Dahunsi memorial Senior and Junior school and Community Senior and Junior secondary school.
The students were taught the Sustainable development goals through interactive sections. SustyVibes were able to explain to the students how the sustainable development goals can be achieved. The students also learnt ‘Financial Literacy’ by learning and playing the Monopoly anchored by Bestman games.
It was fun filled for the students as they also had refreshments from our sponsors Rite foods, SoYummy, Wilsons drinks and Mr Ekpa.
One of the students identified as Labake from Wahab Folawiyo said ‘I will teach everybody in my class about SDGs and tell my parents about it. I am happy I was selected to attend this program’.
The Co-Founder Amokeodo Ibiyinka said she was delighted that the students were willing to learn new things and help in solving the problems bordering around sustainability. She also said they will be doing more in teaching the Sustainable development goals in Nigeria. They are calling on partnerships with organizations so as to reach out to more students and get more people involved with the development.
